Visit of two Rizal descendants in Europe
Belgium-December 2009
Last October I gave a two hour's lecture "Rizal in Europe” at the National Historical Institute. The same lecture was given to the Rizal family.

Mrs Malou Villaroman at the Rizal marker in Ghent, BelgiumA descendant of Rizal's eldest sister Saturnina, Mrs. Malou Villaroman, asked for more information about the hotel Noailles in Marseilles where Rizal stayed in 1882. As soon as she found out that there was no Rizal marker at this location she informed me about a visit to Europe.
At the end of 2009, Mrs. Villaroman and her daughter Beatriz came to Europe and visited France and Belgium. With the help of the Knights of Rizal in Paris she started the procedure for the installation of a marker in Marseilles.

Before lunch Mrs Villaroman leafed through my Rizalian library consisting of more than 300 titles and we talked about Jose Rizal. After lunch we visited the Rizal markers in Ghent and Brussels.
Mrs. Villaroman left very satisfied Europe and knows that Rizal is also still alive in Europe.

In 1995, Marian went to work in Calgary as a caregiver.
Eventually she got her Canadian citizenship and was later able to bring her only sister Grace to Canada. Through their hard work, they were able to save enough money to buy a 400 square meter lot in Cebu City which they intended to construct an apartment building. The sisters agreed in writing that the property will be divided equally and that Grace would own the South side and Marian the North side of the land. Unfortunately, before they were able to start building the apartment, the sisters found out that they were both dating Amadeo, their dance instructor. A bitter fight ensued and the sisters went their separate ways. For years they refused to talk to each other....

Historic Moments in Our History
The Battle of Mactan, APRIL 27, 1521The best source of the battle is the accounts kept by Pigafetta, who was the chronicler in Magellan's voyage. In describing the battle, Pigafetta pictured himself helplessly watching his brave captain valiantly fending off Lapulapu's men to give time and opportunity for his soldiers to climb aboard the ship safely, depart and save their lives. Mortally wounded, Magellan was was left behind and died while fighting in the waist deep shores of Mactan....

When we relate to other people, it is but natural to adapt different versions of yourself. One cannot openly say “ P*tang Ina” in front of one’s mother, or it would be quite unnatural to greet a peer by making “mano po”. With the collection of letters that Rizal exchanged, different aspects of his personality come out. Rizal kept all the letters that he received because “through them he wanted to study the character, temperament, transformation, and intellectual tendencies of his friends and countrymen” (Viola 324). So we do the same now to him.
In a letter, addressed to Trinidad Rizal, Rizal fits into the role of “Kuya”. He tells of his adventures in Germany and his impression of German women who are not afraid of men and are more concerned with substance than with appearances. So like any kuya, he encourages Trining to form the habit of studying, so as to adorn herself with substance. He ends the letter asking her to write him back in Spanish....

MERRY CHRISTMASNo one can deny that Christ Jesus is the reason for the season of CHRISTMAS that is why it is called CHRISTmas. It is his birth some two thousand years ago in Bethlehem that we are celebrating today. Sometime ago, people in their perceived hurried and busy life started to shorten Christmas to Xmas. Merry Xmas became in vogue in lieu of the original and longer Merry Christmas mostly in nonformal print and written media. But to think of it, X in Xmas does not mean an unknown entity or quantity like the X in Xray discovered by Roentgen rather it is the first letter of Christos, the Greek X or CHI and thus X in Xmas is the abbreviation for Christ. So it is still alright however in recent years of modern commercialism and political correctness, Merry Christmas or its short form of Xmas is being phased out altogether in the corporate and commercial greetings with Happy Holidays and/or Seasons Greetings....

Update Issue - February, 2008NAGBABAGONG KLIMA SA PILIPINAS, nitong nakaraang dalawang buwan nagsisidaing ang mga naninirahan sa Baguio dahil sa tindi ng ginaw, 8-sentigrado. Di pa umano sila nakadanas ng pangangatog sa ginaw. Dahil hindi naman nangyayari ito, walang central heating ang mga bahay. Suot daw nila ay patong-patong at nakabalabal ng makapal.
Naitanong namin sa sarili, paano na lang yong mga taga Cordillera na hubad ang kalahati ng katawan at nakatapak. Sinasabing magtatagal pa itong lamig....

Ito’y isang pagkakataon upang ang isang malaki at magastos na pagdiriwang na noong panahon ng kaniyang walang malay na kamusmusan na punong puno ng mga magaganda at matatamis na ala-ala ay muli niyang masaksihan.
Ngunit marami nang naganap na malalaki at maliliit, magaganda at pangit, masasama at mabubuting mga pagbabago sa daigdig lalo na sa ating bayan. Mga pagbabagong naganap na ang iba ay nagdulot ng hirap at ang iba ay nagdulot ng ligaya sa daigdig na ating ginagalawan....

It is indeed a good fortune that I chanced into this thread. I am not surprised to find that Rizal is more honored in foreign lands than in his country. His teachings are ignored in the matter of language, well expounded in the 7th Chapter of El Filibusterismo. Another thing is the retraction hoax which Ka Pule2 expounded in depth during a talk delivered last June 21, 2009 at the Rizal Shrine in Calamba City; as well as his call for the Jesuits in this country to apologize for their fabricated retraction letter, in the manner that the Vatican admitted her error in having condemned Galileo's theory that the earth is round. How could this writer keep in constant touch with Munting Nayon News Magazine. Many thanks.
