From Bayan International

Dear All,

Bayan's Balsa ( Bayanihan para sa Sambayanan, or roughly translated, People's Cooperation for the People ), is calling its friends here and abroad to gather cash and materials for the victims of the Big Flood of Sept. 26.

We urge our friends abroad to send CASH instead of goods because, in the end, we may not be able to bring out from the piers and airports the clothes and other stuff you might send due to terrible government bureaucracy. We have enough horror stories to share with you in our attempt to get said items.

You can send said cash to RITA BAUA or CYNTHIA VILLAMOR, Account number 3 180 14540 1 at MetroBank, Tomas Morato Branch, Morato Street, Quezon City.

Imperialist and local bureaucrats' plunder ( mining, massive logging, quarrying, land conversion ) and the GMA regime's lack of priority to acquire hundreds of big rubber boats ( AFP officials admitted they only had 13 rubber boats ), helicopters with pilots with night vision equipment, amphibian vehicles, dump trucks, thousands of lifevests and food/medicine kit for our compatriots who are trapped in rooftops, etc.

Thank you very much for your concern and assistance. Hope you don't suffer donor's fatigue.

From Phil-Am Charity Foundation

Dear All,

I am appealing to all community leaders of different organizations to provide whatever assistance they can do to help our poor kababayans who are affected by typhoon Ondoy.

We can help by pooling our own resources to help those who are in dire need of help at this time.

Let me know if you are interested and perhaps we can meet and put our heads together how we can quickly maximize our resources and direct our assitance to help those affected by the recent calamity affecting thousands in different provinces in the Philippines.

Yours in Christ,
Luz Sapin Micabalo

When we relate to other people, it is but natural to adapt different versions of yourself. One cannot openly say “ P*tang Ina” in front of one’s mother, or it would be quite unnatural to greet a peer by making “mano po”. With the collection of letters that Rizal exchanged, different aspects of his personality come out. Rizal kept all the letters that he received because “through them he wanted to study the character, temperament, transformation, and intellectual tendencies of his friends and countrymen” (Viola 324). So we do the same now to him.

In a letter, addressed to Trinidad Rizal, Rizal fits into the role of “Kuya”. He tells of his adventures in Germany and his impression of German women who are not afraid of men and are more concerned with substance than with appearances. So like any kuya, he encourages Trining to form the habit of studying, so as to adorn herself with substance. He ends the letter asking her to write him back in Spanish....
