The untold story of the Battle of Ising, a decisive battle in the liberation of Mindanao during WWII, will be shown in an exhibit at the Davao Museum of History and Ethnography at the Davao Insular Village Phase 1, Lanang from March 13 – June 12, 2009.

Entitled “The Battle of Ising”, the exhibition chronicles the seven-day ordeal of the 130th Infantry Regiment of the 107th Division of the United States Forces in the Philippines (USFIP) from May 3rd to the 10th of 1945 in their valiant bid to prevent the Japanese forces from occupying northern Davao and parts of Agusan called “Free Davao.” The exhibit is a product of a two-year research in local and foreign archives on the Battle of Ising and substantial first-hand accounts from the 22 living Battle of Ising veterans who were interviewed.

The exhibit will also feature the launching of the Battle of Ising catalog written by Ms. Marie Silva Vallejo, which extensively compiles the documents, images, and interviews related to the historic event. Vallejo hopes that the catalog becomes a significant addition to the few existing publications on WWII Mindanao. In the introduction of the catalog, Vallejo also hopes that the “tribute to the 130th Infantry Regiment spark a deep interest to continue the celebration of our forefathers’ deeds and research into Mindanao’s proud past as it did for me. “

Major sponsors of the exhibit are Marco Polo Hotel-Davao, Southern Philippines Foundation for the Arts, Culture & Ecology and Emcor Inc. For inquiries about the exhibit, please call Davao Museum at (082) 233-1734 and look for Chi or Wilma.

Attached are photos taken during the reception night of the exhibit last March 12 at the Davao Museum, Insular Village. There is also a photo of the book catalog.

James Zobel, archivist of the MacArthur Library in Norfolk, Virginia was a guest at the reception and spoke of WWII Davao. The day before, he spoke to over 250 students at the Ateneo Davao on WWII Mindanao and offered to exchange information with the students. Here are some captions on the photos.

Enjoy viewing the photos.

James Zobel and me. James was a special guest at the reception. He is the archivist of the MacArthur Memorial Library in Norfolk, Virgina. He had gone earlier to visit Bataan, Corregidor and went to Baguio to pack the papers of Chick Parsons for donation to the library. I asked him to speak at the Ateneo Davao to the college students on WWII Mindanao because it is such a rare treat to have a resource speaker like him. Future generations do not know much about the importance of Mindanao. I have a chapter in the book on the importance of Mindanao.

Battle of Ising

Foreword
Ricardo Trota Jose, Ph.D.
Professor
Department of History
University of the Philippines

Philippine history is replete with Filipino heroes. This was especially more so during World War II when the Philippines was invaded by Japan. Many – or most – Filipino heroes, however, are unfortunately unknown to the present generation. Some medals and citations were awarded in the years just following World War II, and memorials and monuments were erected. Although memorial ceremonies were – and continue to be – held, the heroes usually remain in the background as other people take center stage. Thus, the really deserving men and women have faded into obscurity, lumped together in vague generalizations and clichés in speeches and books.

Furthermore, most of the histories of World War II in the Philippines have focused on Luzon. The battles fought on Luzon were, of course, important in the war effort, and in the wresting of the Philippines from the Japanese. But there were significant battles fought in the Visayas and Mindanao, battles which may be known in their immediate locality but not in the national consciousness.

Mindanao in particular has not received the attention it deserves. Mindanao was important strategically, and much of it was never occupied by the Japanese. The resistance movement involved Filipinos from all walks of life, from different regional and cultural groups, fighting for the same general principles. And yet so many of them and the battles they fought have not appeared in histories of the Philippines, even specialized ones on World War II.

This book, by Marie Silva Vallejo, is thus a big contribution to making known to the country and the world the heroes of one particular battle, the Battle of Ising. She lifts the participants out of the depths of obscurity and presents them as living individuals. Ms. Vallejo’s father was an important figure in that battle, and this work shows what a dedicated daughter can do to restore the credit and attention her father and his men have long deserved. Her research was exhaustive, bringing in not only the Filipino side of the battle, but the American and Japanese points of view as well. She has unearthed much that is new, and by publishing her findings in book form has now put the battle and its participants in the limelight for all to see. This work extols the gallantry and heroism of the Filipinos in particular, and serves as an important record of Filipino courage, ingenuity and love of country. The appendices are of great importance and provide the reader with much needed relevant information, as well as the names of those who fought in the battle.

Ms. Vallejo and her research team are to be lauded for recording the veterans’ stories and letting them speak. The Battle of Ising is thus brought back to life to symbolize one of the numerous Filipino victories against the Japanese. It should serve as an inspiration to keep the memory of this battle and its heroes alive – and also as an inspiration for other Filipinos to restore to their righteous recognition the other battles and their heroes in other parts of the country. It is works like this which make one truly proud of being a Filipino.

This the first time I read or heard about the Battle of Ising which I presume to be in Davao ? Can the author MS. Marie Silva Vallejo be gracious enough to give a brief synopsis of the battle as to the location, forces involved and the military objectives ?

I thank and laud the author for writing the story. One comment on the pictures shown - the name of the veteran in striped shirt is not mentioned and with his age he may not have many more years left to enjoy and reminisce the victory in the Battle of Ising.

Hello there Munting Nayon; Netherlands, good day and God bless.
I am very fortunate to read an article related to the history of ISING, Davao del Norte.
This place become very popular in February 2009, because
of the savage crime committed to teacher who was killed and thrown in the area.
I am from Davao City and I live close to the insular village and used to work with the insular hotel. I am very glad for this article although I saw the monument at the intersection, leading to Sto.Tomas and Tagum City respectively.
I am very thankful to Ms. Vallejo for your effort in taking research and eventually publishing the article and kept it at the archive of the Davao Museum which is jointly put-up by the Zonta club.
God bless you in the Netherlands and especially attention to Mr. Flores, reminding you if you read the attachement of my email message related to a remote village in Bukidnon, whom I mentioned; that they are in dire need of the following: road; electricity and water.
Regards.

Ramon

Greetings to Ms. Vallejo:

Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario has always been proud to tell us about the Battle of Ising. As a media practitioner,I am also interested about that battle.

Please be informed that I have a book about the history of Davao printed in 1950.My father owned it and it is now in my possession after he passed away.

The Japanese had camps in Tagum called Magugpo during that time and Magugpo was known as the Seat of Free Davao, considered as the last frontier of WWII in Mindanao. It's an interesting book, really.

Many veterans in Tagum can be interviewed and they can give info about the war.

Please send me your reply and I will gladly collaborate with you if you will allow me to participate in your project.

My thanks,
Ann Gie

This is in response to Angelina Santos Collis. Magugpo was the old name of Tagum and there are veterans who might still be living there. We tried to find as many veterans of the battle that we could find including those of their children. The list of veterans' names are in the book. We were all volunteers in this project and any help you can give is most welcome and appreciated. Please contact me at gowhenever@yahoo.com. Thank you. Marie

It was Yuletide season, a good time for another family reunion in the Philippines.  We celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother Danny and his wife Cindy’s house.  Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina hosted Christmas lunch.  Our holiday meals were both delightful and generous.  It was time for some physical vacation activities.  Our destination – Coron in the province of Palawan.

Coron is remote.  We took three modes of transportation to get there - by air, land and sea.  Our big family tour group flew from Manila to Busuanga Island just north of the island of Palawan, then rode two vans through hills and dirt roads, before taking two motor boats to reach our secluded vacation hideaway by the beach.  The skillful boatmen waded and pushed the two small crafts as we passed through shallow waters between mangroves.

Experienced painters are often confronted with the problem of what to do with their early works whose originally unnoticed flaws have become more obvious with the passage of time.

Some professionals suggest the slash-and-burn option which consists in carrying out literally what the words mean. One should get rid of anything that could blot one's otherwise brilliant portfolio. Some artists already held in high esteem find this a sensible solution to avoid damage to their reputation or a plunge in their market-value. But, in this age when the dividing line between mediocrity and excellence in art appears to be non-existent, this suggestion seems extreme.

The majority, of course, recommend keeping them as is. One should not be ashamed of one's humble beginnings. If anything, early works are testaments to the artist's hard-fought struggles to achieve perfection or fitting preludes to a story with a happy ending. This is fine as long as one is willing to be reminded constantly of one's previous mistakes.
