Annie Virata-Hewes with Her Philippine Flag in Glass
In acknowledging Ambassador Cardozo, Virata-Hewes said the glass-sculptured ‘Flag’ is her interpretation of the original Philippine flag. She stated she drew light through her glass sculpture rather than shed light on it, thus the colours and refractions are alive and vibrant.
She said she has personal connection with the Philippine flag being a descendant of the national hero Emilio Aguinaldo who was one of those who designed the original flag in 1898.
Selected recent sculptures of Virata-Hewes are also now shown at Galerie Noordeinde, with the Philippine “Flag” in glass as the center piece, a tribute to the proclamation of Philippine Independence, annually celebrated on June 12.
Virata-Hewes is a UK-based artist who creates sculptures and jewelry in glass and raku. She is a graduate of the University of Essex at the Colchester School of Art and Design and was a pupil in glass-blowing and roll-up glass technique at the Van Tetterode Glass Studios in Amsterdam under the guidance of well-known artist Louis la Rooy.
Her works were exhibited in Japan, Canada and Switzerland and she was shortlisted at the British Glass Makers Exhibition 2008.
The reception which was held in The Hague at the Galerie Noordeinde was attended by Dutch government officials, members of the diplomatic corps in The Hague and about a hundred Dutch and Filipinos in the Netherlands.
