Weesp-November 12- For her 65th birthday Lily’s wish was to have a party with her two children and intimate friends present. Told of her plan, her Berghaus circle were glad to lend a hand to their gentle and good natured Lily.

Early in the afternoon of the 12th of this month Lily’s crew was busy preparing for the evening’s festivity. They hung balloons, arranged the house and brought their specially prepared food before the arrival of guests.

After the buffet dinner her two children Jun and Tieka, and guests mostly former Berghaus-Amsterdam co-workers, other kababayan, Dutch and Indonesians close to the family sang Happy Birthday in English, Tagalog and Dutch ending with loud shouts of hurrahs. The celebrant was beaming with happiness as she posed for her souvenir photos holding the poster with “65” boldly printed.

Lily Nelmida who hails from La Union came to the Netherlands 40 years ago by twist of fate. An officemate asked her if she would be interested to work in Berghaus, a garment manufacturer in Amsterdam. The Pinay who signed a three-year contract changed her mind and did not join the group that flew to Amsterdam.

The “panapal butas” agreed. After her contract, Lily like other Pinays who married Dutch, permanently resided in the Netherlands. She raised her two children Jun and Tieka Masfar while working full time.

The children have left their nest in pursuit of their careers but the home in Weesp in the outskirt of Amsterdam remains busy. It is home to friends from the Philippines, Canada, United States and elsewhere who tour Europe. Guests could also be a friend of a friend.

Hi Lily!
Great photos of your birthday celebration. I can't believe it's been that long since you left to work in Holland. I remember you travelled alone (as the group had left when you finally got your travel papers), so you did not even know your group. But you have easily amassed new friends. And now, you are the center of a celebration of your 65 years, 40 or so of which were spent in Holland (longer than you did here in the Philippines). Yet you have remained simple and sincere.
You deserve such a celebration, Lily. You have been so
kind and accommodating to all your friends. And, yes, even to friends of your friends.
I thank God for having you as my friend since our college years. May God continue to shower you with more blessings, a relaxed and enjoyable life, and a healthy body.
Your birthday celebration Part 2 will be here when you visit us. Tot ziens!

Merci

Before going to Aklan during this Philippine vacation, we visited the Bicol region and Palawan.  We were joined by Danny and Cindy’s sons, Chip and Kitt, and granddaughter Kaye in Bicol.  Chip and Cherry’s toddler Carl was also with us.  Carl was a constant source of laughter for us, with his developing vocabulary and thickly-accented singing.

Fr. Danny T. Imperial, Cindy’s old-time friend, was our most gracious host in Naga City.  He held a private mass for Boy and Teng to celebrate their renewal of vows on their 41st wedding anniversary, and a thanksgiving mass for our sister Quiding, who celebrated a milestone birthday in late December.  Father Danny gave us the rare privilege of viewing the 300-year-old wooden statue of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.  He told us his personal account of how the image was stolen then recovered in the early 1980’s.  We even had the opportunity to join the healing sessions of the Daughters of Mary at the Basilica....

This still life was painted in 2003 when painting was for me more enthusiasm than expertise. This work was quite acceptable to me then if not perfect in terms of forms and composition. The shells, the main objects of interest and basically orange in color, were set off by a complementary blue atmosphere. The sturdy triangular arrangement bound the various elements into one strong unified whole. The yellow peaches and fruits marked the tips of the triangle that served as an enclosure of where the excitement was concentrated. Very little seemed to be lacking in this creation.

But, looking at it now, I can't resist the urge to inject more vibrant colors and greater atmospheric perspective in what now appears to be a dull and flat composition. Neither can't I help noticing other shortcomings: the lemon peel is too long, the shells lack natural luster, the fruits and leaves are not fresh, and the strong contrast between the warm and cool table draperies grab too much attention. A renovation is certainly needed and is clearly the most logical next step....
