The preliminaries held on May 17 placed Kesiah as 2nd runner up for People's Choice. There are 62 candidates from all over Canada and the winner will be announced on May 19 at the St. LAwrence for the Arts.

Kesiah is not new to pageants having won the Miss Binibining Pilipinas Teen, years ago, then she joined Miss Manila and won 2nd runner up.  She also joined Turismo Pilipino in the Philippines and was one of the semi-finalists.

We hope Kesiah wins it this time.

It was Yuletide season, a good time for another family reunion in the Philippines.  We celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother Danny and his wife Cindy’s house.  Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina hosted Christmas lunch.  Our holiday meals were both delightful and generous.  It was time for some physical vacation activities.  Our destination – Coron in the province of Palawan. 

Coron is remote.  We took three modes of transportation to get there - by air, land and sea.  Our big family tour group flew from Manila to Busuanga Island just north of the island of Palawan, then rode two vans through hills and dirt roads, before taking two motor boats to reach our secluded vacation hideaway by the beach.  The skillful boatmen waded and pushed the two small crafts as we passed through shallow waters between mangroves.

Still Life with a Crab
Sometimes, ideas for a painting come from unexpected places. I was browsing once through the Facebook album of my cousin-in-law when I came across her orchid collection and pictures of a giant crab as big as a placemat.

It immediately hit me that the flowers and the crustacean could become the subject of my next still life painting. I had never painted a crab before and my previous orchids, although looking like orchids, certainly needed to look more like orchids.

I started picturing in my mind all imaginable arrangements involving the two with the crab as the main element and the orchids as supporting cast. When I had chosen a definite composition, I immediately sketched it on a drawing pad and there was nothing that would stop the painting process from then on.
