In an unprecedented gesture from the chair of the Election Tribunal, Sir Eugenio S. Labitoria, KGOR declared all nine candidates for election to the Supreme Council of the Knights of Rizal 2012-2014 elected by acclamation.

The nine newly elected trustees of the Supreme Council for Rizalian Year 2012-2014 are declared elected by acclamation by Sir Eugenio Labitoria, KGOR.

There being nine vacant posts in the new Supreme Council, and there being exactly nine candidates, all of whom have been examined and certified by the Election Tribunal as morally fit to take office, if there are no objections, I hereby declare all nine candidates elected, announced the chair, to the cheering and applause of the audience.

Sir Labitoria then went on to say This has been the fastest, cleanest and most peaceful election ever in the history of the Knights. . . . I wish to commend those candidates who, in the spirit of harmony and fraternity, withdrew their nominations: Sir Vicente G. Ramos, KGOR, the outgoing supreme exchequer who has served several terms in that difficult office and has just given us an easy to understand financial report; Sir Reynaldo Mateo, KGOR, celebrated singer of the Rizal Hymn, and who has generously given up his candidacy to maintain unity and fellowship among the brothers; and Sir Reynaldo San Juan, KGOR.

5. Sir Diosdado Santos, KGOR
6. Sir Rene Elias C. Lopez, KGOR

Thus far, only the supreme commander has been duly elected; the other officers shall be confirmed shortly

Prior to the elections, the audience was warmly welcomed by Sir Henry Mendoza, KCR, deputy commander of the Taguig City University Chapter, who spoke on behalf of Honorable Ma. Laarni Cayetano, mayor of Taguig City and Sir Lutgardo Borbo, KGOR, president of the University.

The knights present loudly cheered the arrival of Sir Carmelo Boy T. Gempesaw, KGCR, former supreme commander and the only member of the Council of Elders to appear. Sir Boy was former regional commander of Davao, created and strengthened many of the chapters there. He had been sick lately and arrived late, but came all the way from Mindanao for the elections and fraternity.

In delivering his fraternal message and report, the outgoing supreme commander, Sir Pablo S. Trillana III, KGCR, commended his outgoing deputy commander, Sir Reghis Romero II, KGCR, recalling that shortly after their election in 2010, he had announced in Cavite that Sir Reghis would be the next supreme commander and that it was specifically intended to use the term of the deputy commander as the training period for the eventual supreme commander. Throughout his discourse, Sir Pablo appealed to his fellow knights to nourish and deepen ones understanding and appreciation of the ideals of the national hero, Dr Jose Rizal.

Reporting in tandem on the activities of the Order, Sir Reghis Romero, KGCR, the outgoing deputy supreme commander who shared leadership as acting supreme commander complemented the written report of the supreme commander and the Supreme Council (issued together with the new Bagumbayan magazine). Sir Reghis stressed the need to reach out and involve all knights in the work of training youth leaders, and the concomitant need to partner with dynamic organizations that specialize in youth, education and community service. It is also necessary, said the deputy supreme commander, to recruit new members who are morally solid and intellectually prepared to lead the young people and expand our chapters worldwide. We must be less dependent on voluntary contributions and devise new ways of raising funds to be more responsive to the needs of the community.

It was Yuletide season, a good time for another family reunion in the Philippines.  We celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother Danny and his wife Cindy’s house.  Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina hosted Christmas lunch.  Our holiday meals were both delightful and generous.  It was time for some physical vacation activities.  Our destination – Coron in the province of Palawan.

Coron is remote.  We took three modes of transportation to get there - by air, land and sea.  Our big family tour group flew from Manila to Busuanga Island just north of the island of Palawan, then rode two vans through hills and dirt roads, before taking two motor boats to reach our secluded vacation hideaway by the beach.  The skillful boatmen waded and pushed the two small crafts as we passed through shallow waters between mangroves.

Experienced painters are often confronted with the problem of what to do with their early works whose originally unnoticed flaws have become more obvious with the passage of time.

Some professionals suggest the slash-and-burn option which consists in carrying out literally what the words mean. One should get rid of anything that could blot one's otherwise brilliant portfolio. Some artists already held in high esteem find this a sensible solution to avoid damage to their reputation or a plunge in their market-value. But, in this age when the dividing line between mediocrity and excellence in art appears to be non-existent, this suggestion seems extreme.

The majority, of course, recommend keeping them as is. One should not be ashamed of one's humble beginnings. If anything, early works are testaments to the artist's hard-fought struggles to achieve perfection or fitting preludes to a story with a happy ending. This is fine as long as one is willing to be reminded constantly of one's previous mistakes.
