SYDNEY – The Australia Philippines Services League (APSL) will mark Philippine Independence Day with both formal and informal activities, kicking off with the traditional flag raising ceremony at Bowman Hall, Blacktown 16 June and capping off with the traditional dinner at Rooty Hill RSL in the evening.

Supreme Commander Col. Chris Pilao said APSL has conducted the flag raising rite since 2005 with the support of the Blacktown City Council, which has again provided assistance for this year’s festivities.
Admission to the flag raising ceremony and program is free, as with viewing ‘The way we are – a Filipino motif display’ at Blacktown library until 23 June.qz
APSL supports the library display project along with Blacktown City Council Library, the Philippine Department of Tourism Sydney and The Philippine Voice Pty Ltd.
Various presentations at Bowman Hall will help keep alive Filipino traditions, values and practices which formed the basis for the declaration of independence 12 June 1898 in Kawit, Cavite when Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo freed Filipinos from their Spanish colonisers.
The Independence Day celebration will finish with dinner at Rooty Hill RSL, ‘home’ to the APSL. Tickets at $50 per head are available from APSL board members.
Col. Pilao recently won a seat as a Rooty Hill RSL director, paving the way for increased participation in mainstream activities among Filipino-Australians.
Established in 2004, the APSL comprises veterans of various areas of conflict including Korea, Fiji, Lebanon, Vietnam and Mindanao, former service personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Australian Defence Forces, and descendants of war veterans.
