PBC goes six; 5th Intercolor Badminton Tournament concludes
Wed 11th July 2012

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – It was in July 2006 when the Pinoy Badminton Club (PBC) was created and materialized, through the brilliant minds and efforts of its founders, the power couple Nemencio Cabatuando and Doeleth Gatdula-Cabatuando (MD). Now on its 6th successful year, PBC celebrates its anniversary and holds the 5th In-house Intercolor Badminton Tournament held at the British International School Gymnasium last July 6, 2012.

The one-day activity commemorating the sixth year of PBC with this year’s theme, “Beat the Summer Heat” was composed of an opening program, championship games and awarding ceremony.

The opening program started at 9:30 in the morning with a parade where four competing teams comprising the Yellow, Green, Blue and Orange teams lauded cheers and excitement as they paraded wearing t-shirts corresponding to their team color. John Paul Aleta, a correspondent of ABS-CBN’s Balitang Middle East and Kabayan Tambayan was the Guest of Honor and Speaker, who also happens to be an ex-PBC member. FAPS Crew Dancers made the crowd wild with their breath-taking dance number while Charmae Lyncel Columna mesmerized the audience with her soothing voice, two of the guest performers coming from FAPS who rendered intermission numbers. On the other, Christian Nidar, a PBC member sang to the tune of ‘Price Tag’ which made the audience move.

In addition, Fahad Batua, rendered a powerful tagalong song which awakens the tired yet happy and fulfilled participants. Eventually, it was Orange team who clinched the Over-all Champion beating its closest contender, the Green team who ended 1st Runner up. 2nd and 3rd Runners up went to Blue and Yellow teams, respectively.

At the end, it was not only winning that made the PBC Family determined, but rather to continue its legacy of bringing joy to its members; prosper great bond of friendship and family togetherness. For the record, PBC is known for winning most of the higher flights in various badminton tournaments being conducted anywhere in the Kingdom.

The whole-day activity was graced by PBC officers and members, ABS-CBN TFC/Kabayan Tambayan, Charlotte Villones, Filipino Athletes and Performers Society, Abel Guevarra (Backyard Grill) and Enjaz Banking Services and was hosted by Rona and Robbie. It was Yuletide season, a good time for another family reunion in the Philippines.  We celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother Danny and his wife Cindy’s house.  Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina hosted Christmas lunch.  Our holiday meals were both delightful and generous.  It was time for some physical vacation activities.  Our destination – Coron in the province of Palawan.

Coron is remote.  We took three modes of transportation to get there - by air, land and sea.  Our big family tour group flew from Manila to Busuanga Island just north of the island of Palawan, then rode two vans through hills and dirt roads, before taking two motor boats to reach our secluded vacation hideaway by the beach.  The skillful boatmen waded and pushed the two small crafts as we passed through shallow waters between mangroves.

Art books often advice beginners to copy the works of the masters as a way to improve their painting skill. The reason is that one can't paint a good picture until one has seen a good picture. During their formative years, the masters themselves copied from their more advanced peers.

I actually witnessed this copying phenomenon in our visit to the Louvre some years ago. The sight of artists, both novices and professionals, busy with their palettes and brushes was as spectacular as the masterpieces they were trying to replicate.

Great as it may sound, this training methodology, however, is not always possible especially for those of us with no easy access to museums and galleries. But, such working procedure could be approximated using images from art books or other sources as substitutes. It's true, prints of paintings are seldom as excellent as their original, but, for learning purposes, they would do.
