PRESS RELEASE
Kontemporaryong Gamelan Filipino (kontra-Gapi) Prepares Euro Tour Concert June-September 2013
Manila
July 31, 2012

qz The Kontemporaryong Gamelan Filipino (Kontra-GaPi), the resident ethnic music and dance ensemble of the College of Art and Letters, University of the Phillipines - Diliman is preparing for a concert tour of Europe from June to September in 2013. Having been tested as a performing group all over the archipelago and abroad, Kontra-GaPi aims to display its interpretation of Asian aspects of Philippine culture yet again in Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland which they toured with unexampled success in 1997. This time around however, the troupe will include France, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Poland and Slavonic and other states in their itinerary.

For twenty days last May, Kontra-GaPi undertook under Department of Tourism Region VIII auspices a "cultural caravan" of three cities and 12 municipalities in the Eastern Visayas provinces of Biliran, Leyte, Northern Samar and Samar rendering 51 engagements, "a first in so short a time" in the 104 history of U.P. The ensemble has also gone on concert tours of nations closer to home such as Australia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. qz

Their last international mission was May to October at the Philippine Pavilion at the Shanghai, China World Expo 2010 where as the only featured Asian-style act they proved to be among the top draw watched literally by millions of visitors.

In all, Kontra-GaPi left home for foreign engagements in ten successful tours showing that new art inspired by venerable traditions drawn from Indigenous peoples of the Philippines expanding to South East Asia can capture the attention and admiration of Filipinos & the world.

The only ensemble of its kind in the country today, Kontra-GaPi brings forward in innovative ways the usual Filipino folk and ethnic dance fare by combining variegated cultural elements to construct "new" music and dance vocabularies. For an example, a well-received number is Ka-Pa-Ti-Ma where inspirations from the Kalinga, Palau'an, T'boli and Manobo ethno-linguistic groups are drawn to form a new music-dance creation.

Declared an "outstanding resident performing group" by U.P.Diliman and several times declared "U.P. ambassador of goodwill for culture and arts, " Kontra-GaPi offers FREE  performances, workshops in music and dance, lecture-demonstrations, lectures and consultations on culture and arts in exchange for accomodations (food and bed), in-city & cross-country transfers, arrangements for all activities and events and the usual courtesies.

It was Yuletide season, a good time for another family reunion in the Philippines.  We celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother Danny and his wife Cindy’s house.  Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina hosted Christmas lunch.  Our holiday meals were both delightful and generous.  It was time for some physical vacation activities.  Our destination – Coron in the province of Palawan.

Coron is remote.  We took three modes of transportation to get there - by air, land and sea.  Our big family tour group flew from Manila to Busuanga Island just north of the island of Palawan, then rode two vans through hills and dirt roads, before taking two motor boats to reach our secluded vacation hideaway by the beach.  The skillful boatmen waded and pushed the two small crafts as we passed through shallow waters between mangroves.

This still life was painted in 2003 when painting was for me more enthusiasm than expertise. This work was quite acceptable to me then if not perfect in terms of forms and composition. The shells, the main objects of interest and basically orange in color, were set off by a complementary blue atmosphere. The sturdy triangular arrangement bound the various elements into one strong unified whole. The yellow peaches and fruits marked the tips of the triangle that served as an enclosure of where the excitement was concentrated. Very little seemed to be lacking in this creation.

But, looking at it now, I can't resist the urge to inject more vibrant colors and greater atmospheric perspective in what now appears to be a dull and flat composition. Neither can't I help noticing other shortcomings: the lemon peel is too long, the shells lack natural luster, the fruits and leaves are not fresh, and the strong contrast between the warm and cool table draperies grab too much attention. A renovation is certainly needed and is clearly the most logical next step.

Time is a very valuable thing we cannot afford to waste.  In today's gangrenous economy we can't afford to squander time for it is the very thing life is made of and it's what we are paid for.  We need to find time for anything that is worthwhile instead of whiling away with time.  We must use time...
