LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF MUNTING NAYON

Sat 17th December 2011

As we get closer to the end of year 2011, looking at the 2 pictures taken last month celebrating Kwartellaan 2’s 40th anniversary, and posted at the latest issue of Munting Nayon, memories of 1971 flashed back.

For the 99% from the 3 groups of Berghaus Girls who went to “occupy” Amsterdam, Wehl and Ulft, that was a first of so many things: excitement of seeing another country, seeing relatives who left the previous years, and meeting...

Dear mr. Flores

How surprised I was when I got the information about the website Berghaus Girls

My name is Pieter Deiters and I was since 1972 appointed by my father Ben Deiters Manager of te Berghaus Company.
At that time there where groups of philipine girls working in Ulft Wehl and Amsterdam.

I have attented several national phillipine days in that time together with te ambassador to the Netherlands de la Rosa. As you might remember the phillipine groups were only allowed to stay for three years by the dutch gouvernement, so after that many went to canada.

I worked with Berghaus till 1999.

In 1993 my family the Deiters Family owners of Berghaus decided to sell the company to the british group Coats Vyella.

After that I stayed in the company till 1999 as president and than left to Switserland, where my wife and me live now.

Now I am still active in the boards of several garment and textile companies in te Netherlands ,USA and Switzerland.

I am however often in Holland and would like to arrange a meeting with you and the people behind this wonderfull idee of keeping the Berghaus spirit alive.

Looking forward to your reaction,

with best regards
Pieter Deiters

Dear Mr.Deiters,

It's so nice to read a comment from someone who has been an integral part of the Berghaus Company.

I was one of the lucky girls who was chosen to work for your company. We had a caring social worker (Ms.Perla Javate) who made sure our needs were met and Berghaus was really good in providing those needs.

Most of us were teenagers when we left the Philippines and you can just imagine the worries of our families. Holland became our second home because it made us feel that we were welcome and we belong. It also gave us the chance to travel around Europe that opened our eyes and our minds to different cultures in this part of the world. You see, we were homesick but it was only short term because Holland was really hospitable to us.

Berghaus also gave us a chance to better our lives and our families because most of them were sponsored here
in Canada and in the States.

We are forever grateful to Fr.Croonen and his brother Mr.Croonen for they paved the way for us to work in your family's company and of course, the Dutch government who at the time signed the agreement for us to work in your country. We are now called the WAU Group 1973-1976. The acronym stands for Wehl, Amsterdam and Ulft. It was created because we worked at these three different locations of Berghaus.

Thank you again, Mr.Deiters for your insight and it would be an opportunity to meet you someday along with some other Berghaus ladies either in Holland or here in Canada.

Sincerely,

Tess Parto

The WEHL-AMSTERDAM-ULFT Group 1973 - 1976, Social Worker: Perla Javate (6th from left)
Hello! My name is Lester Espiritu and I am the nephew of one of the Holland Group member that is located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada. I was looking through the website and I must say that there really was a lot of memories back then. Even though I'm still young, I've already been told about the histories of the groups, from my aunt to other group members.

Anyway, my aunt was from the WEHL-AMSTERDAM-ULFT Group 1973 - 1976 Social Worker: Perla Javate.

My aunt said, when they first came to the Netherlands, their group was WEHL 3 (Nov. 1973 - Feb. 1974), then they became AMSTERDAM GEINWIJK 2 (Feb. 1974 - Nov. 1974), and then ULFT KWARTELLAAN 3 (Nov. 1974 - 1976).
