A jeepney ride back home
Ontario-Canada

With my recent visit to the Philippines I couldn’t help noticing the apparent breakdown of the drivers’ discipline and their little or no regard for the traffic laws--it’s a free-for-all situation over there. Drivers could pick up passengers anywhere on the streets, even stopping right in the middle of the road.

While driving, one should always be alert for possible collision with motorcycles   snaking through the traffic; they can be seen in all the road’s corners— in a few seconds they are in front of your car, and after a while they are on your car's side, inching their way to the traffic.  Mind you, most of these motorcycles drivers including their wives and children riding with them, don’t wear crash helmets.

Let’s show the beauty of the Philippines
Sat 10th December 2011

A few Days ago while I was in a social gathering, I found myself instinctively “selling” our beautiful country to a Canadian couple by trying to cajole them into visiting the Philippines, assuring them that it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience seeing these  world’s famous Underground River in Palawan, the Rice Terraces in Banaue and the White ‘baby powder” sands in Boracay beaches.

Besides, there are other undiscovered tourism treasures scattered throughout the country’s 7,107 islands, and aside from these natural beauties, we have highly westernized malls where they can go shopping and bargain hunting; just like the cities of New York or Toronto, we have a vibrant and never-ending nightlife in Quezon City, Manila, Makati, Davao and Cebu.

Alang- alang syndrome--a bane to Philippines’ progress?
Toronto-Canada
Tue 13th September 2011

My late father Ka Tino used to tell me that if we could only remove the word alang or the phrase alang alang in our daily vocabulary, we would be able to   minimize the incidents of graft and corruption in the Philippines and spur it to economic progress.

Our strong sense of gratitude (utang na loob) and the harmonious way of getting along with others (Pakikisama) are the root causes of this alang alang mentality, he said....
